Obituary for Sereta Ann Wise

On Saturday, May 16, 2020, Sereta Ann Wise, the beloved mother of four children, passed away at Kempsville Health and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia and entered eternal life at the age of 79.

Sereta Wise, youngest child of Ernest and Sereta Kelley was born in Nassawadox, Virginia on June 12, 1940. She attended Mary N. Smith High School, where she graduated 15th out of 139. She would go on to marry Edward Thomas Wise of Accomac, Virginia and relocate to Boston Massachusetts, where they started a family. After parting ways, Sereta would care for her four children, study business management at Northeastern University, and work as a supervisor for Polaroid Corporation, for over twenty years until her retirement in 1988. After retirement, Sereta relocated back to Virginia’s Eastern Shore to care for her ailing father and later moved to Virginia Beach to be closer to her children, all of whom had relocated there with their families.

Sereta gave her life to the Lord at an early age and maintained this spiritual relationship throughout her life. She joined Calvary Revival Church in Norfolk, Virginia, where she served on the women’s ministry, the hospitality, and the senior ministries until her health prevented her from attending. She was a wonderful servant who cared for and assisted ailing elders. She was passionate about her grandchildren and cherished and encouraged them. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for them. Sereta loved to sing hymns and would serenade visitors, strangers, and medical staff alike and always knew how to draw a smile from all who encountered her. She was always described by others, as the sweetest person with a generous heart and a loving soul.

She is predeceased by her parents, Ernest and Sereta Kelley of Painter, VA; her sister, Ethel Robinson; and brothers, Rossley Kelley, Cassell Kelley, Ernest Kelley, and Otha Collins.

Sereta is survived by her three sisters, Mae Ellen Wise of Boston, MA, Barbara Singh of Brooklyn, NY, and Julia Beckett of Accomac, VA. Her spirit is carried on by her four children, Antoinette Kelley, Sonjia Wheaton, Edward Wise, and Zenobia Wise, all of Virginia Beach, VA. Let Not Your Heart Be Troubled

Whenever I am troubled
and lost in deep despair
I bundle all my troubles up
and go to God in prayer…

I tell Him I am heartsick
and lost and lonely, too,
That my mind is deeply burdened
and I don’t know what to do…

But I know He stilled the tempest
and calmed the angry sea
And I humbly ask if in His love
He’ll do the same for me…

And then I just keep quiet
And think only thoughts of peace
And if I abide in stillness
my “restless murmurings” cease.
