Obituary for Jasine "Jazz" Smith

Jasine “Jazz” Smith of Saxis Road, Temperanceville, Virginia and Seaside Road, Exmore, Virginia, departed her life on November 29, 2018. She was born on June 6, 1953 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late Wilford and Ina Claire Smith.

At the age of 3 months old she was taken in and raised by her loving and devoted surrogate parents, the late Myrtle and Malvin Milburn of Temperanceville Virginia. Myrt and Mac were a testament to the true meaning of unconditional love by accepting her as she was. That unconditional love was put to the test many times because of the challenges they faced raising Jazz. As Myrt would sometimes say “God made her that way and God doesn’t make mistakes.” They loved her as their own. Jasine remained on the Eastern Shore until she departed this life.

She attended the little school house in Withams, Virginia until the 2nd grade. Unfortunately, her mental and physical disabilities progressed to the point that she was unable to continue with formalized education.

There were not many people on the “Long Road” who didn’t know Jazz. Anyone who stopped by the house to visit Mom, Dad, or her siblings also interacted with her. She had the biggest...brightest smile and the loudest laughter (mind you) when she was in the “right” mood. One of her favorite things was shuffling a deck of cards, second only to either being given a stick of chewing gum (that lasted for days), or sitting in the car (whether it was moving or not).

After her mother Myrtle’s passing, she lived in a residential home operated by Arc of the Eastern Shore. She would also continue to spend a considerable amount of time at her family home on Saxis Road in Temperanceville...where she especially enjoyed sitting outside in the warmth of the summer sun. Jasine was truly one of a kind in many ways. She touched most whom she encountered and had a loving spirit that shined bright even without her ability to verbally communicate.

She leaves behind her siblings: Gail Milburn, Cindy Riffert (David), Malvin Milburn (Lillian), Michael Milburn, Pia Smith, Dawn Smith, and David Smith. Several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A loving aunt, Betty Harmon and a very special cousin, Rodney Marshall, who was always there to help. She was preceded in death by a brother, James Smith.
