Shirley Deloise Sample earned her wings and transitioned to be with our heavenly Father on Saturday, December 1, 2018, surrounded by family and loved ones. Shirley, the fourth of five children, was born on February 9, 1949 to the late Roosevelt and Rosie Sample. She was preceded in death by her brother, James Sample, Sr. and daughter, Tammy Sample-Ayres.

In her early years, Shirley joined New Allen Memorial A.M.E. Church. She was a faithful member, serving on the choir the Senior Choir and the Missionary Society. She always attended church, even making a way despite her illness. Shirley attended Mary N. Smith High School and worked at the Hermitage on the Eastern Shore in Onancock, in the housekeeping department.
Shirley enjoyed life, especially spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She could always be seen riding with her sister, Helen, as they spent lots of time together shopping and going to church. Shirley loved the Hallelujah Gospel Singers or as she called them, her “Mens.” She was dubbed the “Queen” of birthday and anniversaries. WESR Radio host noted that Shirley was the first voice she would hear every morning as she called in birthday and anniversary requests for family and friends.
Shirley was an all-around gal. From the 1980s until recently, she could be found watching WWF, now WWE, Wrestling or as she called it “Wrastlin.” She enjoyed crossword puzzles, playing dominoes and Bingo, and watching The Young and the Restless, as well as the The Bold and the Beautiful, before tuning into the Family Feud.
The Sample family has lost a link from its chain, but we know that God never makes a mistake. He only wants the best in His vineyard and has claimed His own. We will miss Shirley’s smiling face and her laugh. Sleep on dear Shirley and take your rest. We love you, but God loved you best.
