Obituary

Gertrude Mears Taylor, daughter of the late Fred Henry Mears and Anna Louise Bunn, was born on February 6, 1931. She passed away from this life on Tuesday, January 28, 2020, after a massive stroke.

Gertrude attended the Accomack County Public Schools and was a 1948 graduate of Mary N. Smith High School. She was a home health provider for many years before retiring.

Gertrude was a member of St. John Independent Church in Messongo, Virginia for most of her life. She loved to cook and enjoyed watching people eat the delectable meals she prepared. Gertrude was famous for her yeast rolls and sweet potato pies.

She always welcomed you with open arms and words of encouragement; no one was a stranger. Her loving spirit could turn any frown upside down.

Gertrude leaves to cherish her memory: two sons, Maurice Taylor and Shawn Taylor; four grandchildren, Cherleeta Copes, Cervone Copes, Maurice Askew, and Shawn Taylor, Jr.; twelve great-grandchildren, Rikece Campbell, Ciara Copes, Cervone Copes, Jr., Evron Strand, Jr., Brelyn Williams, Brazile Williams, Ricardo Copes, Joshua Williams, Ta’Niyah Askew, Syir Askew, Mekhi Askew, and Cyan Copes; two great, great-grandchildren, Kyla Campbell and Rayla Campbell; one son-in-law, Charles Copes; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Dear family,

Although the transition of a loved one leave a void in each of our hearts, we are ever so eternally grateful to our heavenly Father for allowing our beloved great aunt, Ms. Gertrude Taylor, to endow each of us with her infinite love and wisdom.

Oh how we marveled and cherished the fond memories of traveling from Newport News, Virginia to Jenkins Bridge/ Temperanceville, Virginia to see aunt Gertrude, aunt Sarahz cousin Ricky and family. The delicious food aunt Gertrude prepared for us was scrupulously delicious and appetizing....as always, an enjoyable and blessed time was had by all!

Throughout the times we were graced to be in aunt Margaret's presence, she always had a welcoming smile on her face that would change the disposition of a disgruntled visitor. Her Godfearing presence and her wise counsel on any subject matter will definitely be missed.

Although one of our beloved family's matriarchs has fallen asleep, she shall awaken and rise up upon Christ's command and shall live with Him eternally in paradise. Sleep well aunt Gertrude, may the works you've done speak for you. For earth's loss is heaven's gain.

Love always,

Your niece, Melissa Mears Brinkley, sons, Antonio and Colon Brinkley, III; daughters, Alnita, Arlissa Brinkley-Patterson, Wilhelminia "Joy" Brinkley & family~
