Benjamin was a highly educated man. He received his Bachelor of Science and then went on to receive his Master’s Degree in Special Education in 1984. Afterwards, he received certifications for English, Social Studies, Reading Specialist, and two certificates in Mental and Physically Handicapped Children. Ben, as he was affectionately known, was also certified by the Philadelphia Citywide Development Corporation in Estimating, Contract Administration, and Financial Management. He also received numerous awards and certifications from The Eastern Shore Community College in Continuing Education and Workforce Development. Benjamin loved to learn, but he also loved to teach. In many cases he was given some of the toughest students, but he was tougher and definitely up to the challenge. More times than not, they came around to see things his way.
In 1961 Benjamin met Christeen Rodgers in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. A few years later they were married and within that union they had three children, Beverly J. Neal, Benjamin A. Johnson, Jr., and Benita C. Johnson. Even though they divorced in 1990, they remained friends.
The year 2002 was good to Ben. First, he married his present wife, Patricia Chalmers Johnson and second, he retired from the Philadelphia School System. Ben and Pat then moved to Accomack County, where he continued to follow his other passions like fishing, his weekly card games, travelling, and going to the Funny Bone every Saturday. In 2017, Ben and Pat joined the congregation of Macedonia AME Church under the leadership of Rev. Andre’ P. Jefferson, Jr.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents; two older sisters, Minnie Williams and Gloria Johnson; and his granddaughter, Crystal Neal.
He leaves to mourn his death his loving and loyal wife, Patricia Johnson; four children, Beverly Neal , Benjamin Johnson, Jr. (Tracy), Benita Johnson (Keith), and Nicole Young; grandchildren, Oliver Neal, III , Christopher Neal, and Benjamin Aaron Johnson; his great grandchildren, Nysir Neal, Malachi Thomas, Janiyah Barbour, and Oliver Neal, IV; siblings, Delois Woodhouse, Melvin Johnson, Shirley Johnson, Barbara Barnes (William), and Rosa Johnson; and a host of nephews, other relatives, friends, and nieces… all of whom he loved to call ugly.
