Obituary

JAMES ASBURY STRAND, affectionately known to many as Fisher, was born to the late Conway and Willianna Ayres Strand on January 27, 1930 in Onley, Virginia. As God whispered his name, James quietly entered peacefully into the loving arms of Jesus at his residence in Parksley, Virginia. James was a loving and devoted husband for sixty-four years to the love of his life, Virginia (Jean) Northam Strand.

Upon graduating high school, James enlisted into the United States Army receiving an honorable discharge. He then entered the workforce and gave many years of dedicated service to the R. C. Evans Company followed by his retirement from the State of Virginia ABC Board. While employed, he gained many friendships through the entire Eastern Shore and was often acknowledged whether shopping or at a doctor’s visit. He was widely known for many unspoken acts of kindness and held in high regard by all that encountered him. His sphere of influence reached many, especially among his telephone buddies with whom he would chat almost daily.

A lifelong member of Gaskins Chapel AME Church, James served diligently as a Trustee and member of the Male Choir and could often be found doing other ministry in the building up of the church. He was a lifelong and dedicated member of the Mystic Lodge #64 giving leadership and guidance to incoming members with pride.

He often spoke with love and great pride of his nephews Larry, Tommy, Keith, and Calvin and niece Barbara Ann as he was a father figure to them.

Those left to cherish fond memories are: his devoted wife, Virginia “Jean”; son, Ronnie, Sr. and wife Stella; daughter, Yvonne and husband Wade; sister, Margaret; five grandchildren; Melanie, Ronnie (Ebony), Marcus (Darlene), Marlow, and Kristal (Corey); fourteen great-grandchildren; three great, great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins, and a host of dear friends. He was predeceased by his siblings, Vernon, Stanley, Roy, Frances, and Pearlie.

    Notes
In the light of the evolving situation with COVID-19 virus, we are making adjustments to adapt to the current health emergency. In order to reduce the spread of the virus in our community, we are limiting the public’s access to our facility. We will continue to serve our families with the utmost dignity, as well as maintain the safety guidelines provided by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). We have received notification from the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers that funeral homes are included in the Governors Executive Order Fifty-Three (2020), which imposes the following restriction: Effective 11:59 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, 2020 until 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2020, all public and private in person gatherings of 10 or more individuals are prohibited. In accordance with the Governor's Executive Order Fifty-Three, Cooper & Humbles Funeral Co., Inc. will comply and hold all services private until further notice. We will not have any public viewings. In an effort to accommodate family and friends, we are posting photos and the funeral/graveside service video of your loved ones on their respective Book of Memory pages on our website, www.cooperandhumbles.com. This will allow you to have a lasting memory picture and attend the service virtually. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time and as soon as this matter is resolved, we will resume our normal practices.

Although my first contact with Fisher was through his employment, i became better acquainted with him thru my mother, Eva. Always enjoyed talking with him. Our last conversation was about a miniture rose bush he and Ms Jean had given mom. They were the best of friends. Sorry to hear of your loss. My deepest condolences.
