James was educated in the public schools of Accomack County and was a 1981 graduate of Central High School. After high school, he entered the United States Army and was honorably discharged in 1986. Following in his father’s footsteps, James entered the trucking field. He became the owner and operator of J & N Transportation and Farms. He dedicated his life to this business until November 2018, when he retired.
James loved to pick up new hobbies. He loved to grill and was a self-proclaimed “Grill Master.” He also enjoyed fishing, golfing, playing the guitar, playing chess, shooting pool, and riding his motorcycle. His greatest love, however, was truly trucking. James was a member of the Unionville Masonic Lodge #45 in Pocomoke, Maryland.
In 2012, James entered into holy matrimony with Kendall Harmon Dennis. They shared twenty-two years together.
James leaves to cherish his memory: his wife, Kendall Dennis; mother, Nola Dennis; seven children, Javan (Laron) Winfrey, Courtney (Captain William) Hardison, James N. Dennis, Jr., JaMiaya Dennis, Reneka Harmon, Tadell Harmon, and Teaira Harmon; nine grandchildren, Jabre, Layla, King, Karter, Britayn, Isaiah, Lakayla, Nylah, and Zoë; one godson, Jordan Snead; and a host of other relatives and friends.
