Joseph was born on May 31, 1935 in Salem, New Jersey to Charles and Elizabeth Davis. He was educated in the Pennsylvania public school system, where he was the Valedictorian of his graduating class. Joseph received degrees with high honors in Mathematics and Education from Cheyney University, where he was the Salutatorian, and Lincoln University. He dedicated thirty-eight years to the Accomack County Public Schools. During his tenure, he taught at various schools in the county. He was also a member of the Macedonia Masonic Lodge #19.
On December 23, 1957, he married the love of his life, Emma Sue Butts. This union was blessed with two sons, Anthony and Hosea.
“Joe,” as he was affectionately known, had a passion for teaching math. In his leisure, he enjoyed completing word puzzles and sitting outside in the yard and watching cars go by. He also loved to travel to the casino to test out his math skills, to see if he “still had it.” Joe was a lover of classic automobiles. His personal collection included Cadillacs, a Ford Bronco (before OJ Simpson), and an Oldsmobile Delta 88. Joe will ultimately be remembered for his infectious smile, as well as his kind and compassionate spirit.
Joseph was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Elizabeth; wife, Emma Sue; and sisters, Catherine and Florence.
He is survived by his two sons, Anthony (Deon) and Hosea (Kia); five grandchildren, Kendric, Kentoria, Larry, Vitisha, and Emiya; five great-grandchildren, Jaylen, Kayden, Kaliyah, Liberty, and Kaveah; brother, Charles; sister, Mary; loving friend, Mary Garvin; several nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends.
