James Cornell Rich was born to the late Rufus Rich and Catherine Pulley on June 1, 1949 in Savageville, Virginia. He entered into eternal rest on Wednesday, July 3, 2019 at Bon Secours St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond, Virginia after a brief illness.

“Jimmy” or “Rich,” as he was affectionately known, was a very humorous person and made everyone he came into contact with happy. In his early days he enjoyed coaching his softball team, “The TJs.” Jimmy also enjoyed watching his favorite football team, The Washington Redskins. He had a great love for fishing and enjoyed doing so in his leisure.

Jimmy was educated in the public schools of Accomack County and Patterson, New Jersey, where he graduated from John F. Kennedy High School. He enlisted in the United States Army and was honorably discharged after his service. James joined the workforce at Holly Farms in Temperanceville, Virginia. He recently retired from the University of Richmond as a security officer.

James was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, William Truss, Basil Truss, Tyrone Truss, Barry Pulley, and Jay Taylor.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Connie Rich; seven children, Lisa (Calvin) Washington, Tammy (Sherwood) Bailey, James T. Rich, James D. Rich, Taurus Miller, Samantha Jackson, and Jennifer Villa; ten grandchildren, Monica, Calvin, Jr., CaDarius, Lyric, Courteney, Jayanna, Jakira, Tinishia, LaChika, and Camesha; six great-grandchildren; two sisters, Deanna Keys and Barbara Milbourn; two brothers, Linwood Pulley and Albert McKenzie; two sisters-in-law, Vivian Taylor and Audrey Pulley; two special cousins, “Johnny Boy” Davis and Ivonnia “Sis” Drummond; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

I am so sorry to hear about Rich's transition. I offer my most sincere condolences to the family. I considered Rich a buddy, and we had many conversations as he made his rounds to Sarah Brunet Hall throughout the years. He was kind, considerate and very helpful to the many visitors that he came in contact with on campus. One experience I'll always remember about him that touched me. One day as he had finished securing our building, he and I were standing outside the building chatting when a student came up and started conversing with us. I knew her but didn't know if Rich knew her. All of a sudden she hugged him and thanked him for the advice he had given her during what was obviously a difficult time as she dealt with a situation in her life. Yes, he was that kinda guy. Rest in peace, my friend!

This gentle man was a reassurance to me when I worked late nights in Sarah Brunet Memorial Hall on the UR campus. He walked his watch, always stopping to make sure I was OK. Thank you, sir! Rest peacefully now.
