Mary was educated in the public schools of Accomack County. At an early age, she realized she needed the Lord in her life and joined Jerusalem Baptist Church. She was a member of the E. L. Bruce Singers, Senior Choir, Gospel Ensemble, Missionary Circle, and assisted the culinary committee during Vacation Bible School.
Mary was united in holy matrimony on September 15, 1990 to the late Norman Wayne Holden. They shared twenty wonderful years and their union was blessed with two children.
Mary was employed at Eastern Shore Seafood for over thirty years until her health began to fail. Most recently, she volunteered with the Democratic party. She assisted with voter registration and could be seen registering people at various stores, schools, and even at their homes.
Mary was a very loving, friendly, and “bossy” mom and sister. Her love for her family and friends was shown through her many conversations on the phone daily. She was a mother to so many and her house was always open to everyone; she never turned anyone away.
Mary had so many favorite things she enjoyed, including, talking, laughing, shopping, listening to gospel music, and going to her favorite restaurant, The Road of Texas as she called it, actually Texas Roadhouse. Mary’s favorite team was the Washington Redskins and she was a diehard fan.
In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Johnny Godwin; sister, Marlene Godwin; and special niece, Kittora Bonniville.
She leaves to cherish her loving memories: three children, Tara (David) Knox, Martia (Charlie) Colmon, and Keyshonda (Niecey) Holden; four godchildren, Tyreek Parker, Mekai Wilson, Shy’taza Lewis, and Duane Armstrong; three grandchildren, Jamaria Holden, Destiny Holden, and Brandon Holden; five brothers, Norris (Maria) Godwin, Kennie (Louveller) Godwin, Calvin (Gwen) Godwin, James Godwin, and William (Sue) Shrieves; one sister, Vanessa Jackson; special sisters, Arlene, Joanne, Gale, Deborah, Teresa, and Bridgette; special niece, Shymekia Brown; devoted cousin, Valestine White; and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
