Barbara Widgeon Jones was born on January 26, 1950 to the late Robert L. Downing, Sr. and Edna Mayfield Widgeon in Eastville, Virginia. She departed this life on April 7, 2020 at her residence surrounded by her loving family.

Barbara was educated in the public schools of Northampton County and was a 1968 graduate of Northampton County High Schools. She enjoyed reuniting with her classmates at class reunions over the years. Barbara was a dedicated nurse for twenty-four years at Heritage Hall Nursing Center in Nassawadox, Virginia. Nursing was her passion and this was evident by the numerous nursing students she mentored over the years.

Barbara met and married Franklin E. Jones, Sr., with whom she shared forty-nine years of marriage. This union was blessed with two children. Barbara was dedicated to her career, but she loved and cherished her family more. Her grandchildren were the “twinkle in her eye.” They loving referred to her as “Lolly.” She loved how her grandson could always put a smile on her face. Barbara affectionately referred to her granddaughters as “Barbara’s Bs.”

In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her son, Franklin E. Jones, Jr.; two sisters, Betty W. Brown and Hattie Smith; and a brother, Wilbert Downing, Sr.

She leaves to cherish her fond memories: husband, Franklin E. Jones, Sr. of Capeville, VA; daughter, Francethia E. “Candy” Church of Capeville, VA; daughter-in-law, Tanya Jones of Accomac, VA; five grandchildren, Shanique L. Davis, Franklin E. (Jasmin) Jones, III, Shamyra M. Jones, Tamyra L. Jones, and Tanae S. Jones; six great-grandchildren, Cassidy, Chase, Franklin, IV, Kehlani, Chloe, and Atreus; five sisters, Lucy Lawrence of Norfolk, VA, Ruby Lawrence of Eastville, VA, Lillian Lister, Annis Downing, and Marie (John) Church, all of NJ; three brothers, Robert Lawrence of Capeville, VA, Robert L. Downing, Jr., NY, and James (Leah) Downing, Sr. of NJ; two sisters-in-law, Martha (William) Lewis and Gracie Hines, both of Cheriton, VA; two brothers-in-law, Jaspery (Gloria) Jones, Sr. and James (Mary) Jones, Sr., both of Cheriton, VA; uncle, Theodore (Mayfield) Widgeon of Eastville, VA; aunt, Irma Harris of Norfolk, VA; and a host of relatives and friends.

Barbara was not only family, but a true friend and a great nurse. I will miss her but I have our memories from playing days at Grandma Lena's to our last family celebration! My condolences to the family. Treasure those precious memories and respect the wisdom that she shared. Allow God's grace and mercy to give you strength and peace.

My heart felt condolences goes out to Barbara's daughter Candy, her husband, grandchildren, siblings, nephews, nieces, cousins and all other family and friends. I will miss your warm smile that matches your big heart. You truly loved your family. Your happiest times were when you were in company of family. Our family gatherings will not be the same. But I know you will be celebrating in heaven with your family gone on before you. RIP dear Auntie. Amen
