Obituary

Sterling Lee Satchell, Jr., born on November 28, 1947 to the late Sterling Lee Satchell, Sr. and Geraldine Satchell, gained eternal rest on Thursday, April 16 at Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital, following a lingering illness.

“Satch,” as he was affectionately known, was educated in the public schools of Accomack County. Following his graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army. Though the Army was nice, he decided that he wanted to be closer to his family. Therefore, he returned home. At that time, he found employment with the County of Accomack. He was employed with the Building and Grounds Department for more than twenty-five years. He was forced to retire due to his illness, however he continued to work and help others in any way he could.

Satch was mild mannered and cool at all times. He loved his family, friends, and associates. He was also an avid mechanic and self -taught auto body technician; he could fix anything. Satch believed that life was what you make it, therefore make the best of it.

Sterling was preceded in death by his son, Doran Satchell; and his sisters, Margaret Major Chandler, Jean Satchell Shrieves, and Jantice Satchell Savage.

He leaves to cherish his memories: his devoted and loving wife, Deborah Lee Satchell; children, Gordon M. Tate (Corlethia) of Bel-Aire, MD, Sterling M. Watson (Lucille) of Los Angeles, CA, Ronnie Watson (Marcella) of Painter, VA, Tobias Satchell (Latoya) of Salisbury, MD, Jamar Satchell of Savageville, VA, Sundae Haggins of Salisbury, MD, and Shelton Handy of Bloxom, VA; step-son, Sherman Handy; brothers, Michael Van Satchell of Savageville, VA, Maurice Chandler (Vanessa) of Painter, VA, and Eldridge Chandler of Killeen, TX, and Lionel Chandler, (Caroline) of Painter, VA; brother-in-law, Marshall T. Handy; thirteen grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In the light of the evolving situation with COVID-19 virus, we are making adjustments to adapt to the current health emergency. In order to reduce the spread of the virus in our community, we are limiting the public’s access to our facility. We will continue to serve our families with the utmost dignity, as well as maintain the safety guidelines provided by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). We have received notification from the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers that funeral homes are included in the Governors Executive Order Fifty-Three (2020), which imposes the following restriction: Effective 11:59 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, 2020 until 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2020, all public and private in person gatherings of 10 or more individuals are prohibited. In accordance with the Governor's Executive Order Fifty-Three, Cooper & Humbles Funeral Co., Inc. will comply and hold all services private until further notice. We will not have any public viewings. In an effort to accommodate family and friends, we are posting photos and the funeral/graveside service video of your loved ones on their respective Book of Memory pages on our website, www.cooperandhumbles.com. This will allow you to have a lasting memory picture and attend the service virtually. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time and as soon as this matter is resolved, we will resume our normal practices.
