Obituary

On June 5, 2020, Mildred White Morris was called home to be with her Heavenly Father after a long illness at her home in Temperanceville, Virginia. She was born June 28, 1933 to the late Eugene and Elnora Holden in New Church, Virginia. “Ms. Mildred,” as she was known by all, was raised by her godparents, Mary and Roosevelt Copes, after the death of her mother, Elnora Holden, at an early age.

Ms. Mildred received her education through the Accomack County Public School system. She was united in holy matrimony to the love of her life, “Frankie Boy,” on September 24, 1951. They shared fifty-two years together before his passing on January 7, 2003. Ms. Mildred was a precious mother not only to her own children, but all that came in contact with her; they were treated as her own.

Ms. Mildred was faithful at whatever she set out to do. She had a love for any type of work that required using her hands, no matter what, it was she really enjoyed doing it. Whether it was gardening in her yard or in her plant room, she could always tell if someone went in that room. She had a great love for cooking, shopping, and riding. It did not matter where she was riding to, she just wanted to go. She really enjoyed being a wife, mother, grandmother, and/or friend; it truly showed, as she was exceptional in whatever role she operated in.

Ms. Mildred was truly a virtuous woman, always walking in the fruit of the spirit. No matter the size of the task, big or small; whatever she set out to do, she did it in love, always joyful, and never ceasing in giving praise to the Lord. She was a faithful member of Jerusalem Baptist Church, where she loved to worship before her health began to fail. Throughout her illness, Ms. Mildred never complained, never stopped giving thanks, and never stopped answering to Ms. Mildred.

Ms. Mildred was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Morris; parents, Eugene and Elnora Holden; godparents, Roosevelt and Mary Copes; son, Frank Morris Jr; brothers, Carl and Levin Holden; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Morris; father-in-law, Frank Morris, daughter-in-law, Loretta Morris; son-in-law, Lawrence Duncan; four sister-in- laws, Irene Schoolfield, Geardline Schoolfield, Mary Johnson, and Judy Holden; four brothers-in-law, Linwood Morris, William Morris, James Morris, and Earnest Morris; two great-granddaughters, Amani and Ariana Downing; two great-grandsons, Adonis Rogers and Cedric Davis Jr; and one great, great-granddaughter, Londyn Morris.

Ms. Mildred leaves to cherish great memories: three sons, Edward Morris, Alvin (Tabatha) Morris, both of Parksley, VA, and Cliffton (Yvette) Morris of Withams, VA; eight daughters, Alice (Marvin) Savage, Betty (Michael) Hall, Shirley Morris, all of Wattsville, VA, Christine (Jack) Collins of Pocomoke, MD, Diann Duncan of Temperanceville, VA, Elnora (Gregory) Lewis of Makemie Park, VA, Teresa (Brian) Collins of Prince George, VA, and Mildred (Mitchell) Byrd of Toano, VA; daughter-in-law, Joann Morris, of Pocomoke, MD; brother-in-law, Calvin (Roxy) Morris, of Wattsville, VA; two brothers, Gene Holden of Elmira, NY and Eugene (Valerie) Holden of Crisfield, MD; two sisters, Valerie Holden of Mappsville, VA and Valistine Taylor of Pocomoke, MD; one honorary sister, Marie “Reet” Floyd of Parksley, VA; thirty-five grandchildren; fifty-six great-grandchildren; fourteen great, great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

With deepest sadness and sorrow to hear of the loss of a wonderful lady! I will always remember fondly the beautiful smile and upbeat attitude Mrs. Mildred would always have. I remember fondly living near the Morris family growing up in Wattsville. She will be missed, but I will always carry in my heart the fond memories of her beautiful smile, loving and caring ways and strong belief in our Lord and Savior. May she rest in peace and I send my thoughts and prayers to the Morris Family. With sadness...Darrell Marshall (Los Angeles).

From the times I shared with Ms. Mildred (when Brian and Teresa brought her to the house to meet the family and on other occasions as well...), her quiet, calm, beautiful spirit made the difference wherever she may have been. It was like God's Spirit exuded from her... peace, love, contentment! Truly, she will be missed! "Though the clouds may hover over us; there's a bright and golden ray.... It's the promise... God shall wipe all tears away." (Hymn and Rev. 21:4) My sincere condolences to my in-laws, the Morris family, and friends.
