Obituary

Odessa Elizabeth Waters Justis, was the daughter of the late Estee & Beulah Waters. She was born on September 17, 1937 in New Church, Virginia and gained her wings on April 25, 2020 at Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland.

Odessa was educated in the Accomack County Public Schools. She graduated from Mary N. Smith High School in 1954.

Odessa was a lifetime member of St. Mark United Methodist Church, now New Beginnings United Methodist Church in Wattsville, Virginia.

Odessa married the love of her life, the late George Alfred Justis in 1958. From this union, they were blessed with five children.

Odessa was employed as a laborer at Perdue Farms in Salisbury until 1979. Afterwards, she became a stay at home mom for her children, grandchildren, and many others. Odessa took care of everyone in her own way.

Odessa affectionately earned the titles “Mommie,” “Granny,” “Mom-Mom Dessa,” “Aunt Dessa,” and “Dessa” from her nurturing spirit. Nurturing was not only to her biological family, but to her children's friends and the community children as well. Odessa was a source of knowledge-we didn’t need the internet just call “Mommie.” She loved gardening and cooking; chicken and dumplings and sweet rolls were her specialties. With her granddaughters peeping over her shoulder, they followed in her footsteps in learning to prepare many delicious dishes, keeping her legacy living on for generations.

Odessa was loved by many but her grandkids and great-grandkids were the apple of her eye.

She was preceded in death by her parents Estee & Beulah Waters. As were her siblings, Myrtle Waters, Albert Wise, Granville Waters, Corneilus Waters and her daughter Lisa Justis.

She leaves the fondest of memories to: two daughters, Crystal Justis (Paige Conquest) and Tina (Leroy) Johnson; two sons, Alvin (Carmel) Justis and Adrian (Aves) Justis; seven grandchildren, Aneshia (Tony) Manuel, Gekeia White-Justis, Allen Justis, Ananias Wilson, Alyese Justis, Adrian Justis, II, and Adria Justis; six great-grandchildren, Teria Manuel, Tony Manuel, III, Elianna Beier, Tyler Manuel, Reagan Wilson, and Avery Justis; one sister, Yvonne ( Randy) Church; two sisters-in- law, Bertha Wilson and Renee Justis; seven nieces, Sherri Church, Sherry Mayes, Stephanie Selby, Natasha Justis, Charisma Justis, Lisa Wise Spivey, and Tina Wise Tunnell; two nephews, Barry Waters and Barry Wise; two special friends, Carrie Dennis and Zeola Ames; two grand-dogs, Summer and Phoenix; and a host of relatives and friends.

In order to reduce the spread of the virus in our community, we are limiting the public’s access to our facility. We will continue to serve our families with the utmost dignity, as well as maintain the safety guidelines provided by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). We have received notification from the Virginia Board of Funeral Directors and Embalmers that funeral homes are included in the Governors Executive Order Fifty-Three (2020), which imposes the following restriction: Effective 11:59 p.m., Tuesday, March 24, 2020 until 11:59 p.m., Wednesday, June 10, 2020, all public and private in person gatherings of 10 or more individuals are prohibited. In accordance with the Governor's Executive Order Fifty-Three, Cooper & Humbles Funeral Co., Inc. will comply and hold all services private until further notice. We will not have any public viewings. In an effort to accommodate family and friends, we are posting photos and the funeral/graveside service video of your loved ones on their respective Book of Memory pages on our website, www.cooperandhumbles.com. This will allow you to have a lasting memory picture and attend the service virtually. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time and as soon as this matter is resolved, we will resume our normal practices.
