Obituary

Martha Anne Sample, beloved daughter of the late Bill Taylor and Annie Sample, was born in Accomac, Virginia on October 12, 1935. She departed this life at the Pinnacle Rehab & Nursing Center in Smyrna, Delaware on Thursday, September 24, 2020.

Martha was educated in the Accomack County Public School system. Recognizing the need to help her family, she entered the workforce at a very young age. Martha worked tirelessly for many years on the local farms and in the graters to provide for her family.

She loved the Lord and enjoyed listening to Gospel music. At an early age, she joined Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Painter, Virginia. She worshipped there until she relocated to Delaware with her family.

Martha was loved by everyone who knew her and she possessed a smile that would brighten any room. She also made the most delicious macaroni and cheese and that along with her loving spirit will be missed by all.

In addition to her parents, Martha was preceded in death by her brothers, Purnell Sturgis, William Sturgis, Jim Henry Sturgis, Ernest Sturgis, Paige Sample, and Howard Sample as well as sisters, Hester Higginbotham, Virginia Sample, and Mary Sample.

Martha leaves to cherish her memories: her son, Lawrence “Larry” (Jacqueline) Sample of Magnolia, DE; seven grandchildren, one whom she raised as her own, Ellis (Sherone) Johnson of Goldsboro, NC, Lawrence Sample, Jr. Chris Sample, Jared Armstrong, all of VA, Jennifer Beckett of Baltimore, MD, Jumar Sample, and Shanty Harris Garnes, both of Magnolia, DE; one sister, Annie Sample of Seaford, DE; a special niece, Brenda Bailey of Exmore, VA; a special nephew, Darnell Sample of Camden, DE; and a host of great-grandchildren, great, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In order to reduce the spread of the virus in our community, we are limiting the public’s access to our facility. We will continue to serve our families with the utmost dignity, as well as maintain the safety guidelines provided by the Center for Disease Control (CDC). Cooper & Humbles Funeral Co., Inc. will comply and hold all services private until further notice. We will not have any public viewings in our facility. In an effort to accommodate family and friends, we are posting photos and the funeral/graveside service video of your loved ones on their respective Book of Memory pages on our website, www.cooperandhumbles.com. This will allow you to have a lasting memory picture and attend the service virtually. We thank you for your patience and understanding during this difficult time and as soon as this matter is resolved, we will resume our normal practices.
