Obituary

Mrs. Berneda Cordilous Allen Nock, daughter of the late Stanford Gregory Allen, Sr. and Annie Cordilous Harmon Allen, was born on March 7, 1950 in Locustville, Virginia. She earned her heavenly wings on February 23, 2021, at Riverside Regional Medical Annex Center in Newport News, Virginia.

Berneda was a dedicated member of St. Luke A.M.E Church since her youth. She was a member of the Usher Board and a Stewardess.

Berneda entered into holy matrimony to Leroy Nock, Sr. on March 7, 1975. Through this union, Leroy gained a son and daughter, Walter Nock, Jr. and Nina Nock. Out of love was born Shaneya Nock and Leroy Nock, Jr. They also raised Robert “BJ” Thomas, Jr. and fostered two daughters, Selena Tankard and Stephanie Wood.

Berneda attended Mary N. Smith High School in Accomac, Virginia. She worked at Gulf Stream Nursery in Wachapreague, Virginia, where she fell in love with plants and flowers. Before obtaining her Associate’s Degree from the Eastern Shore Community College in Early Childhood Education, she worked as a long-term substitute for Accomack County Public Schools. After obtaining her degree, she became a full-time ISS teacher at Nandua High School, where she later retired after over thirty years of service with the county. Berneda returned to Accawmacke Elementary Schools as a long-term substitute teacher and custodian after retirement because of her true dedication and love for the children and the friendships with the various staff that she had made.

Berneda was a devoted and loving grandmother to Shantelle Nock, Shaniya Gibson, Leodiac Thomas, III (Dominique), Dijon Thomas, Terry “TC” Chisley, Raegan Chisley, Zion Jackson, Zaiden Jackson, Adelyn Nock, and Jaice Nock.

Berneda enjoyed cooking for her immediate and extended family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and family. She liked playing bingo, but loved playing spades aka “Silent assassin.” Berneda also liked playing solitaire. She loved being beautiful and dressing up. One of her favorite pastimes was watching her soap operas, The Young and the Restless, The Bold and the Beautiful, As the World Turns, and The Guiding Light. Her favorite character on the soaps was Victor Newman.

Berneda was affectionately known by many nicknames, “Bernedada” by her husband, Leroy, “Bernie” by her late brother, John Allen, Sr., “Aunt B” by her nieces and nephews, “Ant B” by her late niece, Charlotte, “Booboo” by her grandkids, “Boo” by her best friend, Chestina West, “Cheechie Bird” by William Allen, Sr., “Silent Assassin” by her son-in-law, Kenneth Jackson and “Boney Mouf” by her late nephew, Junior (Charles Thomas).

Berneda was preceded in death by both parents, Stanford and Annie Allen; brothers, Stanford Allen, Jr. and John Allen, Sr.; sister, Marion Johnson; brothers-in-law, Melvin Nock and Curtis Nock; mother and father-in-law, Willie and Elizabeth Nock; special nephew, Charles Thomas; and special niece, Charlotte Diggs.

Berneda leaves to cherish her memories: husband, Leroy Nock, Sr.; four children Walter Nock, Jr., Nina Nock, Shaneya Jackson (Kenneth), and Leroy Nock, Jr.; two foster daughters, Selena Tankard and Stephanie Wood; eleven grandchildren, Shantelle Nock, Leodiac Thomas, III (Dominique), Dijon Thomas, Terry “TC” Chisley, Tymel Wilson, Shaniya Gibson, Raegan Chisley, Zion Jackson, Zaiden Jackson, Adelyn Nock, and Jaice Nock; four great-grandchildren, Zayla Williams, Mikenzi France, Leodiac Thomas, IV, and Kynlee Wilkins; sister, Mary Rankin; sisters-in-law, Maggie Nock, Arletha Allen, Emma Nock, and Angela Nock; two brothers-in-law, James Nock (Mary) and Purnell Nock; nieces and nephews whom she treated as her own, Robert Thomas, Sr. (Elizabeth), Robert “BJ” Thomas, Jr. , Sylvia Collazo (Ray), Charlene Finnigan (Timothy), Eric Mikel (Nina), Cheryl Berryhill, and Freddie Thomas; special nephew, Stanford Allen, Jr.; special cousins, William Allen, Sr. and Patricia Davis; best friends, Chestina West and Janelle Geisinger Spangenberg “Ms. G"; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

My deepest sympathy to the family. We will miss your loved one at Accawmacke Elementary School. She was a dear sweetheart. I used to call her Grandma Nock because she treated all of the children at the school as if they were her own grandchildren. She was a very nurturing person when it comes to children. I enjoyed being in her presence, laughing and having a good time at the school. She always had a big smile on her face regardless of how she was feeling. May God give you all strength during this time of your bereavement. My prayers are with you all. God Bless!!
With Love, Stephanie Turner (Mrs. T), Monique Martin and Monica Watkins.
